World Kindness Day
*Makiki Christian Church Preschool’s story starts at 3:15 (3 minutes, 15 seconds)
We do our best to be kind every day, but especially today! On today’s episode of HI Now Daily, we’re celebrating World Kindness Day with by encouraging random acts of kindness, and giving you some ideas of how to help make a child’s hospital stay a little easier.
Toddlers at Makiki Christian Church Preschool donate a toy to a child in the hospital every year for World Kindness Day during the Thanksgiving season.
#BeLikeBarb
Honoring Aunty Barb’s Legacy
Aunty Barb was a member of Makiki Christian Church and a great supporter of the preschool. For many years, she coordinated Happy Boxes and “Christmas Shoebox” projects. Sadly, she passed in December of 2019. The Okabayashi/Muramoto ‘Ohana, under the direction of Cori Okabayashi, has continued their legacy of giving in Aunty Barb’s memory.
The Makiki Christian Church Preschool first joined the Happy Boxes project, when one of our preschool students was confined to Kapiolani Medical Center. It certainly brought him joy during his confinement in the hospital. Our children will also make “Happy Note” cards for each box.
The Happy Box Project
Benefiting Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children’s Child Life Services
Aunty Barb’s light and love has continued to help to improve the quality of life for others through simple acts of kindness and generosity. The Okabayashi/Muramoto ‘Ohana is committed to perpetuate Barb’s faithful work and will be assembling more Happy Boxes for Kapiolani Medical Center’s Child Life Services.
Donations will be accepted for items that bring JOY and promote HAPPINESS for children ages 0-18 years old.
Play is essential during a child’s hospital stay. Child Life Specialists encourage children to explore and fulfill their natural needs to play which helps to minimize their fears and promote positive coping. Happy Boxes are distributed to children when the playroom is closed.
Each Happy Box is filled with items that bring JOY and promote HAPPINESS.
OTHER THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO
- To learn more about Happy Boxes, please visit the website Acts of Random Kindness.
- Please pray for the children receiving your donations, so that they will know they are loved and the boxes will bring them joy.
- Ask your child what they would like to give to a child in the hospital.
- Talk to your child about why we are donating to a child in the hospital. This is a great opportunity to teach your child the “gift of giving.”
Please label your donation with your child’s name and bring items to the preschool at the time of school drop off. We
will share with you the total number of gifts donated. These gifts will be for Thanksgiving.
